Background
Tourisme: On 5th May 1947 the estate was purchased on the behalf of the Houilleres du Nord et Pas de Calais by Mr Leon Delfosse, deputy managing director. In the heart of this immense estate is the castle partly destroyed at the end of the war. As the years go by, during an era where coal plays a leading role in the resources politics of our country (France, the estate undergoes important changes allowing the colliers and their families to enjoy well deserved holidays in this wonderful location. Gradually new buildings are added near the castle: 1953: les Fougères 1955: les Mimosas 1956: la Salle des fêtes 1963: la Roseraie 1977: les Orangers et les Tamaris. The last developments take place in 1983. The drop of production in the collieries resulted in the gradual closedown of the pits. The running of this centre becomes more and more difficult. In 1994, CCAS purchases part of the estate (11 hectares) including the Castle and the buildings. From 1995, 283 beds are available to the gasmen and electricians, in 1999 capacity is increased to 550 beds. This purchase allows to strengthen the assets and to create extra accommodation. Therefore this magnificent estate remained the collective property of (France) our country's workers. Please note that the opening of this holiday centre coincides with the 50th anniversary of the foundation of works councils. What a symbol! From 1998 to 1999, conversions to the estate. CCAS and CRE of the RATP decide to build 60 gîtes, an entertainment hall, a children's club, a swimming pool and 2 paddling pools, 2 activities halls and a bar/swimming pool. In July 1999: CCAS AND CRE OF THE RATP FORMED THE CIVIL ASSOCIATION OF " LE DOMAINE D'AGECROFT". The management of this centre is entrusted to TOURISTRA. The castle was built in 1918 on grounds purchased in 1914 by Harry Leland de Lengley. In 1920, it was named " Domaine d'Agecroft" in remembrance of an estate owned by Mr de Lengley's grand-father in Scotland.
